Hello crochet lion,
Rawr! I’m made this little guy for my adorable little nephew. Not sure if he’d appreciate a plush toy, but I know for sure that if he had a spirit animal lion would be it. So here’s my pattern for this lovely little toy.
Measure:
Height: 21cms.
Crochet hook size: 2.5mm
Yarn : 2 skeins of light brown coloured acrylic yarn
1 skein of dark brown coloured yarn
1 skein of white colored yarn
Pattern notes:
The pattern is worked in continuous rounds without joining at the end of each round. The semi colon between rounds indicates similar pattern is to be followed for the rounds between them. The mane is rooted*.
Rooted:
Follow the pattern under mane for the mane cap. To make the hair like appearance for the mane, cut yarn to strips of desired length to be worked into almost every sc on the mane cap. Fold the yarn in half; make a knot similar to the larks head knot in macramé into the mane cap.
Head:
Round 1: Magic Circle, 6sc into the circle & then pull it close. (6)
Round 2: 2sc in sc around. (12)
Round 3: [sc in the sc, 2sc in the next sc] * 6 times. (18)
Round 4: [sc in the next 2sc, 2sc in the next sc] * 6 times. (24)

Lion’s muzzle:

Stuff the muzzle and attach it to the head.
Lion’s nostrils:
Starting off with a darker colour(I used the brown coloured yarn I used for it’s mane),
Round 1: Magic Circle, 6sc into the circle & then pull it close. (6)
Round 2: [sc in the next sc, 2sc in the next 2sc] * 2 times. (10)
Round 3: [sc in the next 4sc, 2sc in the next sc] * 2 times. (12)

Round 13: 19sc, sc2tog, 19sc, sc2tog. (40)
Sl st and finish off.
Now attach the mane cap to the head, and start rooting it for the lush mane. It’s time consuming but gives you the best effect. After about two or three rows of rooting the hair attach the ears.

:
Round 26: sc around. (20)
Make two of these, stuff and join it with the body.
Eyes:
Using black colored yarn,
Magic circle, chain 1, 6sc in the circle. Join.
Make two of these and sew it onto the head.
Then thread white colored yarn to a needle and make a single stitch on it so that it appears like the light reflecting through his eyes.
Do the same for both eyes.
Now thread the yarn used for his body to a needle and make parallel stitches(like satin stitch in embroidery), covering quarter of his eyes. These should appear like the eyelid, almost making him a droopy eyed lion.
Tail:
Using tan colored yarn
Magic circle, chain 1, 6sc into the circle. Make several rounds of 6sc till your desired length. Make a 2sc increase for the next two rows and finish off. Sew the tail to the body. Root little strips brown colored yarn to the end of his tail.
I started to make this but did i somehow miss the part for the nose because i cant find it anywhere in the pattern
Um, sorry. I missed that part in the pattern. I’m putting that part right away. Thanks for mentioning it! 🙂
Omg thank you for replying so fast you’re awesome! !!
Haha! no problem. I’m just writing a new pattern and happened to be online. 🙂 I’ve updated the muzzle, and it should work. Let me know if I went wrong anywhere. Thanks!
i started making this pattern but the muzzle is still confusing to me. Does sc(3) mean 3 sc in same stitch and 2sc mean 2 sc in consecutive stitches? If so the round adds up to 14 not 16 please help me understand thank u
I went to try it
So I was hoping you would show how to put the black lines for the legs and feet but I do not see it on the pattern.
The nose is listed as “Lion’s Nostrils”
What about the crochet hook size, what size/width of yarn was used and how much yarn was needed
And i also cant find anything for the eyes and tail though i can make up something for that myself. I really love this pattern its better looking than all the other lions i looked at please help me finish it if you can 🙂
Sure! I think I actually made that up as I went about making it. That’s why I don’t have a written down pattern. Putting that up would do me good for future reference and anyone else wanting to make this lion. 🙂
Hi there. I’m confused about round 1 of the muzzle. I ch5, turned work, started in second chain from hook, sc in each of the next three chains. Now what? Do I turn work again?
Sorry about my average pattern writing skills. Yes, you work in rounds around the chain 5.
Starting from the second chain from the hook, sc in the next 3, 3 sc in the last chain. (Turn)
sc in the next 4
And then proceed with the next rounds.
Hope I’m making sense and it helps. 🙂
I’ve updated the changes to round 1 in my blog. Thanks for letting me know.
I suggest:
R1:Starting in second ch from hook, sc in next 3ch. 3sc in last ch. Rotate work and continue 3sc in back loop of 3 chains. (12 st total around).
R2: sc in 3sc,…
(This is the way I think you begin for an oval shape.)
Then 3 chain into last stitch then turn.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to do the eyes on this lion i have it all finished except for the eyes i would greatly appreciate some help figuring it out. Thank you!
This should help,
Black coloured yarn:
Magic circle, chain 1, 6sc in the circle. Join.
Make two of these and sew it onto the head.
Then thread white coloured yarn to a needle and make a single stitch on it so that it appears like the light reflecting through his eyes.
Do the same for both eyes.
Now thread the yarn used for his body to a needle and make parallel stitches, covering quarter of his eyes. These should appear like the eyelid, almost making him a droopy eyed lion.
Hope it makes sense. if sewing doesn’t make the cut, try felt cutouts for the eyelids.
Hello, I’m new to this. But I really want to make this lion for a baby shower gift. What is rooting? How is it done?
https://youtu.be/AWyNNsGM9bQ
This video should explain how rooting is done. Hope it helps.
Would like the patterns for lions…
Hi there; is this pattern US or UK please as in is the SC a single crochet or double? I’ve made a mistake and made my own stitch up (complete newbie) I’ve done through the v, yarn over and pull through both loops and repeat 🙈
It’s me again. What did you use for stuffing? And it looks like you used an E hook, am I right?
Hi, yes I’ve used a 3.5mm hook which is an E hook in the US measures. I’ve used fiber fill for the stuffing.
Good morning. Thank you very much. the video is perfect. One last question. I am creating a PDF document with the pattern so i can save it in my electronic device. As i copy and paste i noticed the Head, Legs, and Arms of the pattern are missing rounds. Is this a fact or is it save to change the round numbers so that they follow in sequence?
Omg! I’m honoured, somebody wanting to make a pdf of my pattern. I’ve added a semicolon between those missing rounds indicating that the rounds inbetween have the same number of stitches. Hope I’m making sense. ?
yes. That is what I was thinking. I just needed to make sure. I can email you the PDF if you’d like. I’ve included the comments because the suggesstions are helpful.
Thanks, I would love to see a copy. You can send it to, hellostitchesxo@gmail.com
Also, feel free to edit them as you please. 😀
I emailed the PDF to your email address. Feel free to request any edits. Thank you again for the cutest lion amigurumi pattern.
Thank you for sharing this adorable lion pattern! Do you have the directions for the tail?
Thanks!!
Thank you Dianne, I’ve updated the blog post with a pattern for tail. I hope I’m making sense and it helps you. Feel free to let me know if it doesn’t work.
Tail:
Using tan colored yarn
Magic circle, chain 1, 6sc into the circle. Make several rounds of 6sc till your desired length. Make a 2sc increase for the next two rows and finish off. Sew the tail to the body. Root little strips brown colored yarn to the end of his tail.
This is an adorable lion, the best one I’ve seen. Thanks for the tail pattern.
Hello. I caught this just in time. I’m a Leo & this lion fits my personality perfectly. Doing it as I type. Was wondering how to do the tail though? Thank you.
Good that he suits you, :). I have updated the blog with the pattern for tail at the end. Hope it helps. Let me know if I’m not making sense.
Thank you!
Hi,
I would like to know what can we do between row 10 to 17 of the Head ?
Thanks
Sandy
Hi Sandy,
It means you have to sc around all the rounds in between. Hope it makes sense.
Thanks! 🙂
Looks like rounds 11 to 16 are missing in the head:
Round 10: sc around. (48)
:
Round 17: sc around. (48)
It’s not missing, it means those rounds in between have the same number of stitches i.e., sc around for all the rounds.
ah sorry, thank you very much 🙂 Sandy

No worries :).
Hello I want to try this but I am unsure of hook size and yarn. DId I miss it ?
Hi there, I’ve used a 2.5mm hook. 🙂
Thank you for this adorable lion pattern. I love it.
hi. I’ve just started crocheting this. I’ve finished the head. When you say finish off, do you mean end with a slip stitch and leave the hole and then sew the head on the body or do you continue with the decreasing pattern until the hole is closed? thanks!
I just meant to finish it off with a slip stitch. All parts of the lion are done
individually and then joined. Thanks for trying it out. 😀
Hello!! Is there somewhere a video that you can provide for the muzzle? I have no idea how to do it. Im just starting out and this is only my second project! Please and Thank you!!
Hi there, I’m sorry the round 1 pattern for the muzzle was rubbish no wonder you had a hard time figuring it out. I’ve made the changes now, hope it helps.

So, so cute!

Adorable! He’s wonderful. I have a question about the yarn. Did you use DK or worsted weight?
Thank you for sharing your pattern. You’re very creative.
Thanks. I’m not well aware of the yarn types, and on a google search I’m thinking the yarn I’ve used is a worsted one. Hope I’m right.
I am extremely confused on how to make the muzzle. I really love this pattern and would love to make it but I’m having a very difficult time with the muzzle. Could you please explain to me how it is done? Thanks so much!!
Hi there, I’m sorry I just tried following the pattern for muzzle and had a hard time figuring out what I meant to put there. I’ve made the changes now, hope it helps. Let me know if it gets tricky anywhere else. Have a good day! 😀
Hello Dibssy

And i hope my members will visit you often.
Thank yo so much
Greetz Crea Ann
How much yarn did u use for each colour? Pretty cute lion 🙂 can t wait to try this pattern.
I’ve used 2 skeins of the light brown colour, and one of dark brown yarn. And some white and black yarn.
Do I need the mane for the lion I don’t remember using it the first time I crocheted the lion
Its upto you. I felt like it looked better with the mane. 🙂
I love this pattern. Thanks for sharing. One question: how did you stitch his toe nails?
How did you do the mane under his chin? When do you attach the head to the body?
Hi Jen, I sewed his head to the body first and only then started rooting his mane. The mane under his chin had to be rooted to the head just below the muzzle.
Hi, I’m from Argentina and I tried to do this beatiful lion please try to explainme whats mean TOGS for the mane . Thanks a lot.
Reblogged this on Yarn Junkies.
Thanks for the free pattern. I wish I could say that I am going to go out and make bunches of these guys for Christmas – but that’s only a wish. Thanks for all your patterns!
Thanks! Wish you a have a good time making them as I did. ?
How would you make this bigger like double the pattern?
Sorry Tenauh, I am not really sure how that works. Hope you’d be able to use this as a guide and make him bigger.
I doubled the yarn and followed the same pattern. Then on the nose, eyes, mouth and tail I did it with one strand, otherwise it was too big for the lion’s body. I didn’t do a mane cap and just attached the mane to the head and did two strands in each hole. I can send a picture of what mine turned out like if you would like. I would just need your email address. Mine is sistersfancystitching@gmail.com. I hope this helps!! Such a fun cute pattern.
Thanks Stefanie, your version sounds great! I would love to see a picture of yours. Send it over to hellostitchesxo@gmail.com please.
Thanks for the pattern! Quick question what colour is the mane cap? Same colour as body or same as “hair” 🙂
Same colour as the hair ?
I am unsure of what kind of yarn and what size hook to use
Hi Jessica, I’ve used acrylic 8ply yarn and 2.5mm hook. Something similar should work well with this pattern I think.
Thank you for sharing your pattern., and the links to the tutorials. They are very helpful. Your creations are precious!
Thank you! Glad you found them helpful ?
I don’t crochet next to my computer. Why can’t I print it?
I understand, as of now you can may take a screenshot. I’ll try uploading a printable downloadable version as soon as I learn how to do it.
Thanks for sharing! Im trying to do the nostrils.
In round 2 it says you end uo with 10 stiches but you really end up with 9; I think that changes the next rounds.
Hi! I love the lion and am in the process of making one for my nephew but am a bit confused on the crochet hook size. In the pattern you say you used a 2.5 mm hook but later in the comments you say it was 3.5 mm. Which size did you use?
Thanks!
Hallo nur mal ne frage was soll das tog heißen. Sc sind feste Maschen aber aus tog werde ich nicht schlau.
Hello! I’m not sure if this is what you are asking for. Did you want an explanation for sc2tog?
It means using sc to join two sc together.
I would really love to do this pattern but I don’t quite understand how to read them yet as I am still new to crocheting. . Is there any way you could make a crochet along tutorial video? I have a friend that fell in love with this lion and it’s the best one I have seen. I would love to make it for her and It would be amazing if you could make a video. 🙂
Hi Danielle, I’m glad you like the pattern. As much as I’d love to do video tutorials, I do not have the time for it now. I’m expecting my first child any minute now(getting close to the due date) , and I’m afraid if I start with it I may not complete it. But I do intend on making them for you once I’m back and settled in. Sorry I couldn’t be of any help as of now. Thanks for asking.
Omg thank you so much for responding so quickly! Congrats on the new baby and good luck with everything! No rush on the video I have tried starting it to see if I can figure it out. Will be looking looking forward to your future videos 🙂
Thanks?. Good luck to you too on the lion, let me know if you’re stuck somewhere, I’d be happy to be of any help.
Love the pattern!
Can you please upload a crochet along video, I am new at this and would love to make this lion for my friend
Crocheting this guy is a blast! After reading several comments about hook size and yarn size, I would like to say I used 4 ply yarn and a 5mm hook and he turned out great. If you want him bigger I suggest going up a hook size. It does make him less firm but it works. Thanks for sharing this pattern free of charge!
I’m glad you liked it ? And thanks for the feedback!
Hello, i am having a hard time making the muzzle I can’t understand it. Do you have a video where you show how to make it? Thank you.
I am currently making your lion and he is soooo much fun! Thank you thank you for this pattern I wouldve paid for such a great pattern.
The pattern is amazing and I am going to start in my Lion today. Thank you so much.
Hi, How big should the wig cap be when compared to the head? I believe mine came out to small. I used the same hook and stiches but it barely covers the head of the lion. I just wanted to know if thats right or not
(oh goodness I dont know if my first comment sent) Hi, Im loving this pattern but i’ve run into a snag. The mane cap seems to small in comparison with the lion’s head. I used the same hook size and followed the pattern to a T but the end result is a little cap that barely fits over the top of the lion’s head. I dont know if this is right or not
Hi Kat, the mane cap should fit snugly on the lions head. If you’ve followed the pattern, I’m not sure where else it went wrong. It’s been a while since I’ve done it. Can someone who has done it already help us out please? Sorry that I couldn’t help you.
My cap came out the same way. Can’t even pull it over the top of the head. Think it’s wrong :/
But the rest of the pattern is beautiful. Love it so much.
Bonjour, pour la crinière il faut prendre un crochet n°3 au lieu du 2,5 qui est prévu pour le reste
Par contre je comprend pas le sens a mettre sur la tête les 2 petites bosses , peut-être sur le devant pour relever la crinière ?
I made the cap with a larger hook, I think a couple sizes bigger, and it was just right. This pattern is ADORABLE.
I am loving making this for my nephew! I am working on the mane and I noticed it goes from round 8 to 10, is round 9 omitted on purpose? Thank you for all the hard work you did creating such an amazing pattern!
Do you have this pattern available in a pdf? It is adorable.
Hi, I’m also confused about the mane cap. Someone commented that row is omitted.Maybe that extra row of sc would help make it a bit larger? Anyone else try this, or have a solution to make it a big bigger? And I’m not sure which way to put the cap on the head. Do the pointy parts go back to front, or side to side? I had a lot of success with the rest of the pattern, but I’m a little stuck here!
I don’t know if my previous comment went through. Did anyone have any luck figuring out the mane? I agree that it turns out way too small. I would think it’s supposed to fit like like winter toque (sorry, Canadian here!) but the one I ended up with looks more like a beret… not sure what to do looking for support!
the row nine in the cap is missing so I did 9 and 10 in sc and followed the rest of the pattern and the cap fits
Hi! I just wanted to say hi and let you know that complete assembly instructions would be very helpful! I think I attached the muzzle too low and the mane cap too far back. 😕
Rows 11 – 16 of the head are missing. Such a cute pattern but I need the rest of the rows.
Help!
Hi, it just means you have to repeat sc 48 stitches around for all of those rows. Hope it helps!
Trying to crochet lion muzzle and I have done it 5 times, not right, do I do every row around and around, I am confused!
I had no problem with the wig cap. I followed the pattern to a “T” and it worked out fine. I added the hair strands before attaching the wig to the head and was able to place it where I wanted it to be. It turned out great.

Hi! At what rows do you add the muzzle? I used the same size hook for both the head and muzzle but the muzzle looks too big.
Khrysten I was wondering the same thing. I’m with you the muzzle looks too big. Right now I’m making all the parts then putting it together. Right now I guess I will figure it out when I go to put him together. Hope you were able to figure out where to put your muzzle.
hi I really like this pattern but I am a little confused at the end of the head and body do you close the tops at 18 sc or do you add more row till you get 6 sc then close
Josephine Blankenship you do not close the head and body. You leave them open at 18 sc. I have a lot of patterns that are open like this. You just sew the head on top of the body.
Thank you for sharing this pattern. Can’t wait to make one for my Lyon family!
Hello. This is so cute! How many inches tall does this come out to be? Thank you
I had no trouble making the lion except for the legs, and knowing how to attach the parts. Can you make a video or have someone make it for you?
You do not say size of yarn?
I just finished this and it turned out beautiful! Took awhile, but I absolutely love it! Thanks for sharing this pattern.
I’m glad you like it. Thank you! ❤
hi I was wondering why row 11-16 aren’t there?
What s the difference between sc2tog and dec????
I am working the lions muzzle. Does the parentheses mean I do the same stitch in one stitch or do I do that many stitches in the next number of stitches.
Hi! How did you do the lion feet stitches? It looks to be embroidered with yarn(? Or is it embroidery floss?), but I’ve never done one of these before so I wanted to make sure. Thanks for the help!
Hi Regan,
Thanks for asking, i’ve used needle and yarn to embroider the paws.
I have a question about the embroidery on the paws, too. How did you hide the First and last ends of yarn? I did it on the other parts of the lion by hiding them in the mane section. Please advise. Thank you!
Hello! Could I ask you for a contact please? I would like to talk to you about something, please if you have just a minute of a free time, write to me: timszel@onet.eu, thank you ?
Hallo! Ich finde den Löwen wirklich sehr schön. Leider weiß ich nicht genau wie das mit der Mähne gemacht wird.
Just love how he came out I crocheted him for my new grandson who will be born in August!!Thank you
When you use a : does that mean you repeat that row until your next instruction?
Head round 10 skips to 17.
Mane skips from 8 to 10.
Legs skip from 12 to 20.
Arms skip from 13 to 26 .
Hi Marie,
Thanks for asking, yes I meant that there’s no increase or decrease and you should repeat the Row.
Hi. I am about to start my lion for my granddaughter, but I had a question. Do you happen to recall what brand of yarn you used? I know the type I use is entirely up to me, but I have to order it online and it is easier if I can estimate yardage and not buy too much. Thanks in advance.
Hi Peggy, thanks for asking. I live in Australia and I used the Acrylic yarn from Lincraft. It was a 8ply yarn, and finished the whole lion with one skein. The mane needed a little bit more than one skein of brown yarn to make it appear voluminious. Hope it helps.
Thank you! I’ve started this little guy, and I can already tell that he’s going to be a cutie!
Hi! I wanted to ask the patternmaker this question, but I have to get this done soon. Did you make the Lion?
I’m using 4 ply Caron Acrylic
And the feel is so hard. Is it supposed to be?
I imagined it soft and baby feel.
I’m making my first lion with your pattern. It is for my best childhood friend’s grandson. I’m going to put a fuzzy stick in the tail so it can be posed. Thought it might be a cute touch. I love the pattern.
My name is Lupe and I fell in love with the Lion pattern so am going to make one for a new baby.
Hi, so after looking over your instructions I noticed that you have several areas that are missing rows or rounds, are these rounds that are to be crochet the same from the last rounds? If this is the case I think you really need to fix your instructions so that people don’t get confused. I do a lot of crocheting and when I started to read your instructions I thought to my self did she forget to add the rounds as the same as round 10? Which I mean that round 11 – 16 would be crochet as round 10 and the same for the other areas. I know that it must have taken you a while to write these instructions for the Lion but it seems that there are a lot of people who want to make this Lion and when missing information is in the instruction well they just may pass on making it. I almost did till I started making the head and after re-reading the instructions over and over then it hit me that rounds 11-16 are crochet the same as round 10 is. So off I went and got the head done. Great job on the instructions just fix the areas that need to be fixed. Thanks
Wow this pattern is fantastic…mine came out perfect and cant wait to give it to my grandchild when he/she arives next year. Thanks so much for sharing !!
Awesome pattern, thanks for sharing ?
I love the pattern. I have started with 4 ply acrylic and the size crochet hook you recommended. My magic circle is perfect!!
But….this little lion is going to be so “hard”
in feel. Is it supposed to be? I was thinking a soft little lion. The stitches are very tight, giving my lion a sandpaper texture. HELP!

I’m afriad that the lion is not a squishy toy, however it softens over age. Thanks for asking Roberta.
Awesome!!! Thank you!!
Hi! Did you root in extra yarn around the neck? Below the cap? My lion doesn’t have hair all around the neck. I’m certain I can just add it – but was curious if I missed something.
Thanks!
Si possono avere gli schemi in lingua italiana ? Se si, come ?
when doing the mane what length do you cut the brown wool
The ninth row of nostrils is missing.
Is it a typo?
*The ninth row of the MANE
Hi!
I started and now I have to stop at the beginning with the lions muzzle..
I did. the chain with 5, 3 sc, 3sc in the last chain. But the next makes me mad.
Somebody who can help?

I am making this lion with gradients yarn size 4.5 hook first time doing stuffed animal. How can I post a picture ?
Hi Connie,
Congrats on your first stuffed animal. Did you want help with the pattern, or have you finished it already? You can send a picture message on Instagram/Facebook. Thank you!
Hi, can you tell me which rounds to attach the muzzle and ears to the head please? And which rounds to attach the arms and legs? Thanks!
do you have a video to show how to attach the parts? it really challenging for me. thanks
Hi, I have most of the parts made for this cute lion. I was wondering a couple things. First, why do we make an extra ‘cap’ to attach to the head for hooking the mane onto as opposed to just knotting the mane directly to the head already made? Also, is it a better idea to do the cap in the dark mane colour or just the tan colour?
Sorry about the late reply.
If you attach those strands without the cap the tan color is going to show through, and it doesn’t look nice at all.
So I prefer crocheting a mane cap in brown and then attaching the yarn.
I am sure you must have figured it out by now, anyway thanks for asking.
🙂
What rows do you attach the mane and muzzle?
Hi! I’m having a hard time making de mane, it doesn’t fit in the head, maybe I have to increase more? Hope you can help me
Thanks
